James 5:13-14

Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in good spirits? He should sing praises.

James 5:13 NET

James gives us some advice here on two things to do depending on how we’re feeling. If we’re suffering – feeling sad, angry, upset, disappointed – then we should pray. Why should we pray? Well, praying when things aren’t going well for us puts God right into the centre of everything that’s happening. He is the only one who can truly help, the only One who can guide us, and the only One who can give us eternal comfort and peace. Praying to God when we’re suffering helps us to see things through His eyes.

So then, what about when we’re in good Spirits? James says when we feel happy we should sing God’s praises! Why should we do this? Because, everything comes from God, and singing His praises keeps us focused on Him and shows Him how thankful we are for all His blessings.

It’s also true that we can pray when we’re happy, and sing when we’re suffering. Although, it can be hard to sing when we’re really suffering. Each time we connect to God through prayer and singing we learn more about Him and grow closer to Him.

As for me, I will sing about your strength;

I will praise your loyal love in the morning.

For you are my refuge

and my place of shelter when I face trouble

  • What should we do when we’re suffering?
  • What should we do when we’re in good spirits?

Thank you God for always being there to listen to our prayers and praise. Help us to keep You at the centre of our hearts and minds regardless of whether we’re happy or sad.
