Esther 2:1-18

And the king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she met with his loving approval more than all the other young women. So he placed the royal high turban on her head and appointed her queen in place of Vashti.

Esther 2:17 NET

Four years have passed since the banquets we read about in chapter 1. In that time King Xerxes tried and failed to conquer Greece, and in an effort to cheer himself up he begins to look for a new queen. He holds a kind of beauty pageant where all the young women in Persia can come and audition for the role of queen.

One of these women is Esther. Esther’s parents died when she was young and she was raised by her cousin Mordecai. He loved Esther like she was his daughter, and when he heard about the search for a new queen, he asked Esther to put herself forward. Esther was very beautiful and she was quickly favoured by the man who was looking after all the women.

It took a whole year of preparations for the women to be ready to see the king. During this time Esther displayed not only her beauty, but also her godliness. She was favoured by many, but most of all by King Xerxes. When he saw her, he came to love her and Esther became the new Queen of Persia.

During this whole time Esther had never revealed that she was Jewish and descended from the many captives that were brought from Israel all those years before. It was Mordecai’s advice to her to keep her lineage a secret, and she followed his council.

Esther went from being an orphan of a captive nation, to the Queen of the biggest empire in the world! There was no way she could have planned for such a transformation of her life. God, however, always had that plan for her. He knew that she would need to be there at that time, so that all that would follow could come to pass.

God always has a plan for our lives, even if we can’t see or understand it, He has a reason and a purpose for each of us.

And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose
