Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain and there was no rain on the land for three years and six months! Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the land sprouted with a harvest.James 5:17-18 NET
Elijah was a prophet, who lived a long time before Jesus came to earth. We can read about him in the book of 1 Kings. Elijah was a great believer in God, he knew God and trusted Him completely. Elijah prayed that it wouldn’t rain in the land of Israel, this caused a drought, and the drought lead to a famine as there was no water for crops. Now, why would Elijah pray for this? And why would God answer this prayer?
Elijah wanted to bring the people of Israel back to the one, true God and away from worshipping idols. He proved to them that the idols were not powerful, only God was powerful. When they saw this and knew in their hearts that it was true, Elijah prayed for rain and it rained again!
Elijah was just a man, he had no power of his own. But, he was a man of God. He believed with his whole heart that God could and would answer prayers according to His will. Elijah aligned his will with God’s and the result was amazing!
When all the people saw this, they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground and said, “The Lord is the true God! The Lord is the true God!”1 Kings 18:39 NET
